A switch cabinet is an electrical device where incoming external lines first enter the main control switch inside the cabinet, then proceed to individual branch switches, each configured according to specific requirements. These may include instruments, automatic control systems, motor magnetic starters, various AC contactors, and more. Some cabinets even feature separate high-voltage and low-voltage compartments, complete with high-voltage busbars—this setup is commonly found in facilities like power plants. Additionally, certain switch cabinets are equipped with low-frequency load-shedding systems designed to protect critical equipment.
The primary function of a switchgear is to switch, control, and protect electrical equipment during the processes of power generation, transmission, distribution, and energy conversion in an electrical system. The components inside a switchgear typically include circuit breakers, disconnect switches, load switches, operating mechanisms, current and voltage transformers, as well as various protective devices. There are multiple ways to classify switchgear—for instance, based on the installation method of the circuit breaker, they can be divided into withdrawable switchgear and fixed-type switchgear. Alternatively, depending on the cabinet structure, switchgear can be categorized into open-type switchgear, metal-enclosed switchgear, and metal-enclosed armored switchgear. Additionally, classification can also be made according to voltage levels, resulting in high-voltage switchgear, medium-voltage switchgear, and low-voltage switchgear. These switchgear systems are widely used in diverse settings, including power plants, substations, petrochemical facilities, metallurgical steel mills, light industry and textile factories, industrial and mining enterprises, residential communities, and high-rise buildings.
